How to Feed Horses Clover

Clover is a desirable feed choice for most horses. Clover can be fed in the pasture or in hay form because it provides sufficient energy, good proteins and fiber. However, clover can be infected with spores, fungus or mold, causing all sorts of problems from coughing to bleeding. It is better to soak or steam the hay before feeding to make sure it is clean. Although there are risks with fungus, clover is still valuable forage for horses.

Attach the hay net to the fence using zip ties. A hay net is basically a large container made from netting. It hangs on the fence high enough to keep the horse from getting a leg caught in it.

Grab the clover hay and place it into the hay net. Continue filling the hay net until it is full. Push down the clover hay with your hands and fill the extra space with more clover hay.

Let the horse approach the hay net and begin feeding. Horses should eat roughly 12-15 pounds of clover hay per day, depending on their size and workload. Check the hay net daily to make sure the horse has enough food.
