How to Put Weight on an Old Mare

As your female horse, or mare, ages, you may notice that her weight begins to fluctuate and drop. This can be the sign of a health issue, dental problems or simply a shifting metabolism and appetite due to age. If the changes to the mare's diet and feed prove unresponsive, you will need to consult a vet to look further into the problem. Severe drops in weight can be dangerous for the health of the horse and will need to be addressed promptly and with careful observation.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix in corn oil, anywhere from an 1/8 of a cup to a pint, with the horse's food daily. Experiment with your personal mare by starting with a low amount, such as an 1/8 of a cup, and working your way up until you see the desired weight gain.

    • 2

Take the horse to the vet to have her teeth checked and blood tests done. This will help eliminate a health reason for her inability to put on weight.

    • 3

Switch to a feed designed for older horses, such as one that incorporates complete feeds or beet pulp into it.

    • 4

Add a horse-specific supplement, such as Weight Builder, to the mare's feed.

    • 5

Switch to a better quality hay that is higher in protein.
