Instructions
Purchase stabilized rice bran from a reputable local feed store.
Introduce your horse slowly to rice bran by giving him only a 1/4 lb. for several days to limit the chance of colic, resulting from the new feed. Continue to feed the same quantity of grain and hay.
Increase the amount by 1/4 lb. over two weeks until you reach the desired amount. Feed a maximum of 2 lbs. of rice bran per day.
Store the rice brain in a metal or plastic container to keep rodents out of the feed.
How to Feed Stabilized Rice Bran to Horses
Stablized rice bran builds lean muscle, adds calories to your horse's diet and causes weight gain. Rice bran is an alternative to weight builder supplements, alfalfa hay, beet pulp and corn. It has nearly 25 percent more calories than beet pulp. Stabilized rice bran contains 20 percent oil. Preservatives added keep the rice bran from becoming rancid, which is how stabilized rice bran varies from regular rice bran.
