How to Mix Horse Feed

Giving the proper nutrition to your horse is especially important for growing foals, brood mares, seniors, horses in training and those who are sick. Mixing horse feed can be a messy process, due mostly to the weight and awkwardness of the feed bags. A little preparation can make mixing feed much easier. Follow these steps to quickly and efficiently mix horse feed.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your horse feed ingredients. According to the University of Minnesota, different ingredients of horse feed include corn, rye, barley, oats, alfalfa pellets and beet pulp.

    • 2

Place the grain bin where you intend to store it. Once the bin, most often a metal trash can, is full of grain it will be very heavy and difficult to move.

    • 3

Situate other trash cans with lids around the grain bin. These trash cans will be used to balance the bags of feed ingredients around the grain bin. Since horse feed bags are usually 50 pounds, it will greatly help to use the cans as counter space next to the feed can.

    • 4

Lay the feed bags on the trash can lids with the top of the bags facing the opening of the feed can. This reduces the amount of feed spilled and gives you more control of the ratio of feed that you mix.

    • 5

Open one bag and allow some of the feed to pour into the grain can. If you plan to use equal amounts of ingredients, pour a quarter of the bag into the grain can.

    • 6

Open the other bag(s). Pour no more than one quarter of a bag of feed in the feed can at a time. Use your feed scoop to thoroughly mix the different feeds in the feed can.

    • 7

Repeat the process. Continue to pour the different ingredients into the feed can a little at a time and stir until you have filled the feed can or reached a desired amount. Be sure to deeply mix the grain and close the feed can.

    • 8

Store remaining feed. Once you have mixed the desired ratio of horse feed you may have some left over. Roll these feed bags up as tightly as possible and store them in a spare trash can.
