Things You'll Need
- Mane and tail conditioner
- Soft sponge
- Corn oil
Instructions
Wash any accumulated mud out of the horse's mane on a regular basis. This reduces the need to pull the mane, which can make it thinner. Soak the muddy parts of the mane in warm water, then gently massage that mud away to remove it.
Clean the horse's mane with a quality mane and tail conditioner every few weeks, and more often during show season. Wash the mane thoroughly with a mixture of warm water and conditioner, following the instructions on the bottle. Clean the mane with a soft sponge, making sure to coat every strand of the mane.
Untangle any matted hair instead of simply pulling or cutting those matted pieces out. Soak those problem areas in a mixture of warm water and quality conditioner, allowing the matted areas to soak in the water for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Then gently massage those mats out and untangle them. Only cut out any areas that truly cannot be untangled.
Feed your horse a quality diet designed for its age and activity level. A thick, healthy mane is a reflection of the overall health of the horse.
Add a capful of corn oil to the horse's grain at each feeding. This helps to bring out the oils in the coat and encourages the growth of the hair coat and the mane.
