How Do I Make a Hoof Jack Out of a Washer Agitator?

Equine foot care is essential to a horse's health and well-being, but it can contribute to tired and painful back muscles of those performing the hoof maintenance. Using a hoof jack allows the weight of the horse's leg to be supported on a stand rather than by the handler during trimming, rasping or shoeing. If you do not have a farrier supply store nearby, make your own hoof jack using the agitator out of a washing machine. An agitator is the correct height and shape, has a wide base and is strong enough to hold up the horse's leg.

      Top load washing machine agitator

Open the washing machine and remove the cap from the top of the agitator. Pull the cap off, or unscrew it, depending on the model. If the washing machine has a fabric softener dispenser on top of the agitator, remove this as well. With a wrench, remove the underlying bolt and lift up on the agitator.

Ensure the delicate sole will not be punctured or scratched by the hoof jack.

Keep the cap and replace it on top of the agitator. You will need the flat, smooth surface to ensure the horse's comfort while resting its sole on the hoof jack. If you are unable to use the agitator cap, attach a hockey puck to the top of the agitator using duct tape to cushion the hoof when it is resting on the hoof jack. File down any rough or pointy edges to reduce the risk of injury to the horse's sole.

      Hoof care

Stand the agitator with the base down about a foot in front of the horse's hoof. Extend the horse's hoof to the front and gently place the sole on top of the agitator. Allow the horse a few moments to become accustomed to using the hoof jack before beginning to trim or shoe its hoof. You may need to adjust the position of the agitator closer to or further from the horse to ensure that the it is comfortable and standing quietly.
