How to Do Dressage Braids

Dressage training showcases a horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to follow even the most subtle direction from his rider. Horses competing in dressage events must have their manes braided tightly in button-like braids. Many people use the services of a professional to achieve this distinctive look since the braiding process often takes a lot of time. You can save money by learning how to braid your horse's mane without the assistance of a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Comb the horse's mane thoroughly to remove any tangles.

    • 2

Separate a 3-inch section of the horse's mane, starting at the top of the horse's head. Divide the section of mane into three equal parts to braid. Take the section of mane on your right and bring it over the middle section. This section now becomes the new middle section. Then take the section of mane on your left and bring it over the middle section. Once again, this section of mane becomes the new middle section. Continue this process until the entire length of mane is braided. Keep the braid loose toward the top, tightening the braid as you proceed toward the end of the mane. Secure the braid with a braiding elastic. You may find that dampening the horse's mane with water smooths the hair, making it easier to braid.

    • 3

Knot a piece of wax-coated string to the end of the braid by wrapping the string around the braiding elastic a few times. Thread the other end of the wax string through the yarn needle.

    • 4

Use the needle to sew through the center of the base of the braid to create a loop. Take the needle and sew back through the braid, pushing the needle through the knot where the string connects to the elastic. Repeat this process a couple of times before proceeding.

    • 5

Roll the braided loop into the form of a button and hold it in place. Use the needle to pull the string tightly through the rolled braid and back again. Repeat this process two or three times, securing the braid tightly in place along the horse's neck. Cut any remaining string.

    • 6

Continue to the next section of hair until you braid the horse's entire mane.
