How to Pull a Mane Using a Clipper Blade

Does your horse look a bit shaggy? Is your pony having a bad hair day? Maybe it’s time to spruce your riding buddy up and show him or her off. Part of good grooming involves keeping your horse’s mane well kempt and manageable. The easiest way to accomplish this is to “pull” a mane at least every three months.

Instructions

  1. Pull a Mane Using a Clipper Blade

Always start by laying the mane on the opposite side of how it naturally falls on the horse. Using a wide-toothed comb, gently comb out any tangles in your horse’s mane. Your horse is very sensitive at the base of his mane. Comb his tangles as would your own hair after a windy ride.

Next, take a large clipper blade and tease up the longest, unruly hairs, and then using a downward shear, cut them evenly in a tapered manner until the entire length of the mane is done. Work with small amounts of mane to ensure a consistent look. Chunky is not stylish in the horse world.

Finally, using a wide toothed comb, comb your horse’s mane back over to the natural fall. Make sure to check for random stray hairs and individually pull them out or shear them off even with the rest of the mane.

Finish by working a glossy leave in conditioner into the mane and follow up with the requisite treat of choice.
