How to Make a Horse's Tail Appear Thicker

Some horse owners become frustrated if their prized mount has a thin mane and tail. It happens to be the most common grooming concern about horses, but the good news is that with proper care, you can keep your horse's mane and tail thick and beautiful.

Instructions

    • 1

Know if your horse is genetically predisposed to having a thin tail. Genetics plays the largest role in the thickness of your horse's tail. Determine if your horse always had a luscious tail and it suddenly thinned out. Unfortunately, you can't do much to change the innate nature of the horse's hair.

Brush the tail once a month. Although it may be a habit to brush the tail more often, too much brushing can cause hair loss and thinning. Use Cowboy Magic or Show Sheen and hold the tail at the base while brushing.

    • 3

Use a hard brush and lightly brush the tailbone of the horse to stimulate blood flow to the area and promote new hair growth to make the tail thick.

    • 4

Trim the hair every few months. This helps to make the existing hair appear thicker with blunt edges.

    • 5

Put conditioner in the horse's hair whenever the hair feels dry. When the hair becomes dry and brittle, it breaks and the entire tail starts to appear thinner. Keep the hair in good condition to make the horse's tail appear thick.

Volumize your horse's main and tail with products specially formulated to add thickness and volume.
