Choose the right color of hoof oil for your horse. Hoof oil, or polish, comes in clear or black; however, black should only be used on horses with very dark hooves or it can look unnatural. Many groomers select clear polish regardless of hoof color, as black oils and polishes can stain the coat around the feet and is difficult to remove.

Use a hard-bristled brush to remove any dirt, manure or other debris from the hoof before applying the polish. This is also a good time to lift the hooves and check the shoes for object that may need to be removed.

Apply the hoof oil or polish using a brush. Most products come with a brush attached to the cap; however, if not you can use a small to medium-sized paint brush. Apply the oil to the top of the hoof first, just below the ring of hair at the foot.

Work the polish down the hoof, going from ankle to the tip of the hoof with the grain of the hoof. Apply the polish to all four hooves and allow the oil to set. For general care, one coat 2 or 3 times a week will ensure healthy hooves. For a show, you might consider applying a second coat.
