How to Pick Up the Back Hooves of a Horse

Many people find picking up a horse's hooves scary, as they are afraid of getting kicked or stepped on; however, cleaning and inspecting the hooves and shoes is an essential part of grooming your horse, and should be done habitually before your right. A few simple tricks can teach you how to pick up your horse's back feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Approach your horse from the front so that he can see you coming. Horse's cannot see very well behind themselves and can become spooked easily when you approach from the back, causing them to jump or kick. Make sure that you have all of your grooming supplies, such as your hoof pick, brushes and polish within reach before you begin.

Stand shoulder to hip with your horse as you stand facing the back. Make sure your feet are about a foot away from the horse's foot to prevent getting your toes stepped on and then gently lean your shoulder into the horse's hip.

    • 3

Lean gently into the horse, just enough that he shifts his weight to the opposite side. It is harder for your horse to balance when grooming the back feet, so take care not to push too hard. Once the horse shifts his weight, place the hand of your inside arm on the upper portion of the leg, running your hand down the leg as you lean over.

Stop just above the ankle and gently squeeze the tendon at the back of the leg as you make a clicking noise, giving your horse her verbal cue to lift the leg. When the horse lifts her foot, slip one hand under the hoof and support it well while grooming the foot. Make sure that you do not pick the foot up any further than the horse does naturally, as she can lose her balance.
