Instructions

Clip your horse's coat one or even two weeks before the show to give it time to fill in a bit. Clipping your horse right before the halter class is a common mistake that can dock you points.

    • 2

Bathe your horse about 2 days before the class to give the coat a chance to restore it's natural oils. Allow the coat to dry and let your horse roll. Maintain that clean shine by using a currycomb or soft, bristled brush regularly in the days leading up to the halter class.

Trim your horse's mane and tail so that the ends are even. If you are showing English, you should braid both the tail and the main, trimming the ends slightly after the braids are finished. For Western, trim the tail and leave it loose. However, you should band the mane before the show.

Groom your horse's hooves before the halter classes by first having your farrier trim and reshod the horses hooves. Once neatly trimmed, polish the hooves. If you horse has black or blue hooves, use black polish. Otherwise, use clear.

Prepare your horse on the day of the halter class by applying a light application of baby powder to any white markings and a coat polish and a fly repellant. Use a damp cloth to wipe around the eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Keep a cloth in your pocket for touch-ups.
