How to French Braid a Horse's Mane for Hunter Jumper

Hunter jumper is a horse competition and show with a standard for the appearance of the animals in the event. Braiding the mane to a specific style is one of the show's components. The braid is relatively basic but requires an unusual loop at the end. Horses will need to stay put for about 25 minutes as you braid their mane and tie the hair down with yarn.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure about 1.5 feet of yarn per braid. You will require about 19 lengths.

    • 2

Measure a section of mane about 3 1/4 inches. Clip the hair that you aren't sectioning off.

    • 3

Spray the sectioned hair with water and then straighten it with a comb. Divide the section into three even parts. Braid the section until you reach about halfway down.

    • 4

Wrap the yarn around the braid where it stops about halfway down. Continue braiding to the end of the section while incorporating the yarn. Make a loop at the end with the yarn and then put the end of the yarn through the hoop. Pull it tight.

    • 5

Repeat Step 1 to 4 until you reach six inches from the end of the mane. The last part can be tucked under the saddle.

    • 6

Insert the pull-though into the base of the first braid and put the yarn on the hook. Pull the pull-through back through the mane and the braid with go along with it. Make a single loose knot with the yarn. Push half of the braid through the knot and then pull it tight. Tighten it further with another knot. Repeat for the rest of the braid. Cut the yarn where it isn't tied to a braid.

Spray the bangs and then repeat the same braiding process as you did for the back of the mane.
