How to Decorate a Horse's Mane With Beads

Beads may not be an everyday grooming tool for the average horse owner, but they do come in handy for parades, play days and fun shows. Beads add a fun and festive flair to your horse's mane, and won't break the hair like repeated banding or braiding. Decorating with beads takes a creative eye and a bit of time, but a flashy, beaded mane is worth the work.

Instructions

    • 1

Comb through the mane to untangle knots, and spray the hair with water. Wet hair is more manageable than dry hair and will prevent stray hairs from popping out around the beads.

    • 2

Separate a 1-inch-wide piece of hair from the base of the mane near the withers, and clip the rest of the hair back with large hair clips. If the mane is thin or wispy, increase the width of the section to 2 inches.

    • 3

Slide a bead over the end of a crochet hook, and grasp the middle of the mane section with the hook. Hold the bead between your fingers and pull down on the hook to pull the hair down through the bead.

    • 4

Wrap a small elastic band around the end of the mane to keep the bead from falling off. Use an elastic band that matches the color of the horse's mane to make the bead stand out.

    • 5

Pull a second section of hair from the clip and bead the hair as directed in Step 3. Secure with an elastic band, working your way toward the poll until the entire mane has been beaded.
