How to Trim the Mane of a Tennessee Walker

The Tennessee walker -- also called the Tennessee walking horse -- is a breed of riding horse. They are usually dark and solid in color, but can also be found in lighter shades and spotted patterns. Like other horses, the mane of the Tennessee walker breed is thick and coarse, which can make for tricky grooming if you aren't sure what you are doing. If your Tennessee walker is tame enough that you can safely groom it yourself, you can use a few simple tools to trim the mane.

Instructions

    • 1

Detangle the Tennessee walker's mane thoroughly using a mane comb. Comb all the hair over to one side.

    • 2

Pinch a section of the mane in between two fingers where you wish the mane to be the shortest. Cut across the section in a uniform line using a sharp pair of scissors.

    • 3

Cut the rest of the mane section by section, making sure to use the same resistance each time to ensure the length stays consistent.

    • 4

Hold a pair of thinning shears vertically beneath the mane's freshly cut line and clip your way across. This will give the ends of the mane a softer look as opposed to a drastic cut straight across.

    • 5

Comb the mane again and cut any stray hairs using the pair of scissors.
