How to Braid Mane Using Yarn

In almost any equine discipline, neatly braided manes are essential requirements for proper turnout. A perfectly braided mane shows off the conformation of the horse's neck and makes it easier for judges to assess the willingness of the horse to travel at all gaits. An evenly braided mane adds to the symmetry of your horse, resulting in better show scores. Hunter braids, a style of braiding used at hunter shows, use yarn to create neat, tight, distinct braids beginning at the poll and traveling down the neck.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry your horse's mane to remove any lingering conditioners or show sheen products. These products make the mane slippery and difficult to braid.

    • 2

Section off a small piece of your horse's mane and divide into three strands. Braid this section halfway.

    • 3

Lay yarn on the center strand of the braid and continue braiding. Secure the braid with an elastic hair band, leaving the two ends of the yarn dangling.

    • 4

Slip the crochet hook or mane braiding tool through the top of the braid and down toward the yarn. Insert the yarn into the hook, then pull back up through the top of the braid to double the braid over.

    • 5

Tie the yarn in a tight square knot around the top of the braid and clip the loose ends. Proceed to the next braid.
