Things You'll Need
- Small mane comb
- Brush
- Several 8 to 12 in. pieces of yarn the color of the horse's mane
- Spray bottle and water
- Rug hook
- Alligator hair clip
- Scissors
Instructions
Brush out the mane to remove any tangles. If the mane is more than four inches long, shorten it before you start. If it is too thick, thin it before you begin braidiing. Traditionally the braids have been placed on the right side of the neck; however, it is acceptable to place them on the side where the mane naturally falls.
Starting at the top of the neck, use the spray bottle to dampen the first third of the mane. Use the comb to section off approximately one to two inches. Use the clip to hold the rest of the mane back.
Divide this first section into three parts and braid it tightly. When you have braided approximately half way down to the tip, fold a piece of yarn into the braid with each tail going to the outside sections. Continue braiding to the tip, incorporating the yarn into the braid. Tie the yarn around the tip when you are finished to keep the braid from coming apart. Continue this procedure until the rest of the mane has been braided.
Take the rug hook and slip it through the braid at the top of the neck. Push it through to the yarn at the tip of the braid, looping the yarn over it.
Pull the tip up to the top of the neck so it is folded under the top portion, then take one yarn in each hand. Cross them under the mane once, then bring them back to the top side about half way down.
Tie off the yarn using a square knot. Cut off any excess. Repeat for the rest of the braids.
