How to Get Burrs out of a Horse's Mane

Part of proper horse grooming is checking the condition of the horse's mane and tail each time you feed the animal or interact with it. If you notice that your horse's mane contains burrs, you want to deal with the problem as quickly as possible. If you wait too long, you could be forced to cut whole sections of the mane away to remove the tangles. If you tackle the problem right away, you can preserve that beautiful mane and make your horse look its best.

Mix a quality conditioner with water at the recommended strength. Use only conditioners designed specifically for horses.

Build up a good lather, then use a sponge to apply the conditioner mixture liberally to the horse's mane. Concentrate on the areas where the burrs are stuck. Let the conditioner soak into the mane for at least 10 to 15 minutes, reapplying the mixture as needed.

Feel the burrs with your fingers and pull out as much of them as you can. Use the wide-toothed mane and tail comb to gently comb through the mane to remove the remaining burrs. It can take a few applications of the conditioner mixture followed by combing to remove all the burrs from the horse's mane.
