Electric fence installation information

Electric fence is an excellent choice for animal owners, as it keeps them off the fence, which prevents unnecessary wear and tear on the fence line, and safely maintains the stock within its designated area. If installed properly, an electric fence can be virtually maintenance free. Getting it right the first time is the key.
  1. Function

    • An electric fence works by sending a pulsing electric current through conductive wires at regular intervals. These wires are connected to a fence line, but not grounded on the fence line as a standard fence is. When an animal or object that is grounded touches the fence wire, the current travels from the wire, through the animal or object, and down into the ground. All electric fences have a charging box with a "ground" port, and a "fence" port. The charge box supplies the electricity, while the "ground" port provides the grounding of the electrical current, and the "fence" port attaches to the fence.

    Chargers

    • Installation of the electric fence charger is the key to the success of the entire line. There are many different kinds of electric fence, so installation depends on the type of charger you have purchased. Solar powered electric fence chargers can be hung outdoors and need no special covering. Installing a solar fence charger is as simple as securing it to a pole or other stationary object. Standard electric fence needs to be installed indoors and with lightning protection to keep the unit from burning out if lightning strikes nearby. Portable electric fence chargers are usually installed on a t-post or fiberglass post, and are usually battery powered.

    Grounding

    • Your installation of the grounding wire for your fence determines its effectiveness. It is most important, during the setup and installation of your electric fence, to properly set up the grounding rods. Without proper grounding, your fence will be weak and you will constantly have to make repairs, as it will not serve as a good deterrent to your livestock. Follow the directions that come with your charger. Permanent installation requires three rods. Temporary installation may only require one.

    Considerations

    • Important things to consider when installing an electric fence is whether or not you have the proper tools; if you are aware of the risk of getting shocked; and are you following the manufacturers directions. For the many different types of electric fence and electric fence chargers, there are different methods of installation, and one method does NOT fit all. It is important to get directions from a professional if you have any questions concerning the method of installation for your particular fence charger.

    Misconceptions

    • A common misconception is that electric fences, once installed, are maintenance free. It is true that a properly monitored electric fence may not need large repairs, but it is important to constantly check the fence charge and make sure it is not grounded along the line, which renders the fence useless. After proper installation and testing of the fence, it should be checked at various points with an electric fence tester, to see if the charge is steady and working. Another common misconception is that only one grounding rod is needed for installation. To properly install a permanent electric fence, three grounding rods are required.
