Managing Horse Manure in a Pasture

If you have horses, you also have horse manure, and after awhile it can be difficult to deal with the quantity. Fortunately, horse owners can take a number of steps to lessen their burden, while at the same time providing quality fertilizer for both their pasture and their gardens. Managing horse manure in the pasture will take some work, but the result will be a healthier pasture and a happier horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk through the pasture and look for problem spots. A few piles of manure scattered here and there will generally not pose an issue, but it is a good idea to remove large concentrations of manure.

    • 2

Move the manure spreader around the pasture and load the piles directly into it. This allows you to clean the entire pasture much more quickly than you could otherwise.

    • 3

Clean up problem spots in the pasture with a wheelbarrow if a manure spreader and tractor are not available. Establishing a centralized pile well away from the barn and the house will help you manage the manure.

    • 4

Fertilize your own home garden with the horse manure you have gathered up from the pasture. Horse manure makes an excellent fertilizer fro all kinds of crops. Ask your gardening friends if they can use your supply--many gardeners will be happy to help whittle down your pile in exchange for free fertilizer.
