What Kind of Wood to Use in a Horse Barn?

Building a barn for horses can add to the value of your land and become an attractive addition to your property. Taking the time to build one of all wood, or with wooden accents, can be expensive, but the overall beauty of the structure is usually improved by using natural lumber. Knowing what kind of wood to use can make your barn last longer and your investment more worthwhile.
  1. Lumber Choices

    • Depending on the design you choose for your barn, you can use almost any kind of wood available to you, from plywood to wood slats. In the case of pole barns or other larger projects that require more lumber, it is best to use pressure-treated pine or Douglas fir, although almost any wood will do, from oak to cypress.

The main thing is to get quality pressure-treated wood that is also fire-resistant. If you are going to spend the money on wood for your structure, you might as well make your investment last.

    Reclaimed Lumber

    • Builders who are trying to build "green" can choose reclaimed or recycled lumber. These pieces are taken from buildings that have been torn down and the sound wood reclaimed. When you purchase these pieces from a supplier, the work on the lumber has been done. Nails and splinters have been removed, rotten wood has been culled, and each piece has been tested for soundness.

If you are tearing down the building yourself for the lumber, you will need to take these steps yourself and also treat the lumber if it has not been chemically protected.

    Most Common

    • The most common type of lumber used in a horse barn is southern or white pine. This is the most economical lumber and the easiest to obtain. It is easy to work with, in cutting and application. Most building supply stores carry white pine and can deliver it to your building site.

While white pine is an excellent choice if you are looking for an affordable lumber option, remember that it is a "soft" wood, and the horses can and will chew on it. If you choose this lumber for your barn, you will need to take steps to protect it, such as covering exposed edges with wire mesh.
