How to Build a Pony Barn

Ponies are hardy animals and can withstand extreme temperatures in an outdoor pasture life. If you're thinking of building a barn for your pony there are many options, from a 3 walled run-in shed, which gives your pony shelter, but doesn't provide a tack room or interior area for storage, to an elaborate stone barn with hot and cold running water and electricity. The easiest way to build a pony barn is to convert an existing building on the property, like a hog or sheep barn. The dimensions of these barns are small and give you plenty of room for your pony. 1. How to Build a Pony Barn

    • 1

Buy the lumber, hardware, cement, wood paneling and tin at your hardware store.

    • 2

Pick a flat location, out of wind gusts and not in a rain run-off area. Dig four, 4 foot holes in each corner of a 7 foot square for your 4-by-4 foot posts.

    • 3

Pour cement in the holes. Set the 4-by-4-foot posts into the ground. This will give you an inside barn height of 8 feet, plenty of room for a pony's head.

    • 4

Decide which side is going to be the front of the barn (avoid facing North for wind protection). Leave this side open until last. Screw the solid sheet of plywood against the North side of the barn, using the power drill. Attach the 2 plywood panel walls to the other two side posts. Attach the 1/2 plywood panel to post with hinges, to make an opening stall door. Attach hardware to post and to panel for a latch.

Screw your 4 2-by-4 foot cross member boards across the roof to support the tin. Attach the tin roofing to the 2-by-4 foot boards with power drill.
