How to Install an Electric Fence for Horse Pastures

A properly installed and maintained electric fence can be the safest fence option for horses in a pasture. Electric fence is also economical, is easy to install and can outlast even more expensive fencing types. Learn how to install an electric fence for horse pastures to keep your horses safe.

      Measure the area you are fencing. Know the length and width of the pasture, how many gates you need, gate sizes and the desired height you want the fence to be. Gather this information before shopping for electric fence.

      Buy the electric fence of your choice. There are many different types of electric fence, but the most effective and safe electric fence for horses is electric tape fence. The tape fence is wider and highly visible to horses. Electric wire can be used but can be dangerous if not seen by the horses. Some companies offer electric wire that's coated with plastic or includes several strands that are twisted together and more visible.

      Set the end posts for each corner of the fence and on each side of every gate opening. Using 10-foot posts for this is the best option. Bury these posts at least 48 inches into the ground. They should be cemented in the ground.

      Place line posts along the fence line. These posts don't have to be as strong as the corner posts or buried as deep. Use a string line running from each corner post to make sure the line posts are set straight.

      Add the electric fence of your choice to the posts, starting at a corner closest to the power source. Electric fence for horses should be at least 4 to 5 feet tall with at least three strands of electric wire. If foals are in the pasture, use more strands.

      Connect the charger to the fence. With a battery or solar powered unit, follow all instructions carefully when installing the charger. Set into place an adequate number of ground rods according to the amount of fence or wire you are using and the manufacturer's recommendations.
