    • 1

Visit at least 10 different horse barns. Coordinate with people to visit their farms and look inside their barns. Ask the owners or managers what they like and don't like about their barn. Also take note of what you like and do not like. While you are there, ask who built the barn for them.

    • 2

Correlate everything that you noted when visiting the barns and make a list of "must haves," and "don't wants." Be sure to think about tack room, feed room, wash stalls, hay storage, and ventilation. Look over some barn blue prints or plans in magazines, books and online and see if any of those plans match what you want.

    • 3

Take all of your ideas to an architect that is familiar with horse barns. Ask the architect to draw up plans using your observations and within your price range. When the architect is done, ask him to suggest builders for a barn.

    • 4

Contact a few builders to build your barn, and ask them to come out to your property, look at the plans and where you should build the barn. Get a feel of how you would like working with this company, how well you like their ideas, and also if their quote is within range for your price limit.

Go to equine expos for ideas on stalls, bedding, gates and waterers to add to your barn. Collect cards and pamphlets to show your builder to see if she thinks it is possible for your to do in the barn.
