How to Position the Cross Ties for a Horse

Cross ties, used in most barns to limit a horse's range of movement when it is being saddled, bathed or groomed, keep both horse and humans safe. They are especially useful when it is being worked with by a novice rider or when it is being shod or having its hooves trimmed by a farrier.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you want to locate your cross ties. Options include the barn aisle, in a stall, on a separate wash rack or designated tying area. Cross ties must be positioned in a location where there are two secure beams or posts located directly across from each another, separated by eight to 10 feet.

    • 2

Fasten eye bolts into large posts at least six feet above the ground, high enough that the horse will not be able to lower his head to the ground while tied. They must be located at the same height on each post, directly across from each another.

Snap one end of each horse tie into one of the eye bolts. The other end will be attached to the metal buckle beside the nose band of the horse's halter. When the horse is cross tied, each side of its halter will be fastened to a tie, keeping the horse centered.
