How to Hook Up a Generator to a Horse Trailer

A horse trailer allows you to travel with your animals safely and conveniently. However, if you live in an extremely hot or cold climate, this may put undue stress on your animal. One way to solve this is to install a portable generator that will allow you to put a fan or barn-safe heating unit in the trailer. This way you will know that your horses are as comfortable as possible when traveling around the country.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the best place to mount your generator. Find a place that is strong and will support the added weight of the generator without damaging the trailer. A typical generator can weight anywhere from 150 to 200 pounds so the area needs to be sturdy. On the floor and near the rear of the trailer in the bumper area usually is a good place.

Place the mounting frame where you intend to place the generator and use a marker pen to outline four holes where the mounting bolts will go.

    • 3

Measure the bolts and make sure that you have the correct-sized drill bit. Use a metal drill to drill the holes into the floor of the trailer.

    • 4

Place the generator on the mounting frame and secure it using the bolts that came with the frame.

Move the generator and the frame together to the spot in the trailer that you wish to mount it. Connect the mounting frame and generator to the horse trailer with the nuts and bolts that came with it.
