How to Convert a Concrete Floor Into a Horse Stall

Concrete floors are a popular choice for horse stall flooring because it is very durable and easy to clean. However bare concrete floors are hard on a horse's joints, especially if they stand all day. Horses are also reluctant to lay down on concrete floors. In addition, concrete floors can also become very slick when wet, making it a safety hazard for your horse. It is important to cover your concrete floor with a secondary flooring in order to make it safe and livable for your horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy solid rubber mats at a specialty horse or hardware store. You can choose to buy one single roll of rubber matting or separate, interlocking mats.

    • 2

Cover the concrete floor with the solid rubber mat. Make sure the mat is at least four inches thick, covering the stall areas.

    • 3

Buy multiple mats that interlock if one single mat will not cover the entire area of the stall or stable. Make sure the individual mats are secure as your horse may be able to lift a mat if it is not securely attached.

    • 4

Make a bedding area in the stall for your horse. Your horse may not want to lie directly on the rubber matting, so it is important to use another kind of bedding such as straw, sawdust or wood shavings.
