Sliding Door

• Designing a sliding door for your barn carries a number of potential benefits. Sliding barn doors are easy to open and close, and they are very secure as long as the door is latched properly. Sliding doors do require regular maintenance, however, in order to keep the track clean and the door sliding freely. Sliding barn doors also tend to be quite heavy, so that could be a consideration if young children will be opening and closing the doors.

Back of Door Storage

• Keeping everything in its place is a challenge in any barn. Building storage into the barn door itself is one way to overcome this problem without sacrificing space in the main part of the barn. This will not work with sliding doors, of course, but adding storage hooks and pegs to the back of a traditional barn door can be quite useful. Barn owners can add a series of bridle racks, halter racks and equipment racks to the back of the door, making it easy to find whatever items are needed. Even brushes and grooming equipment can be attached to the back of the barn door, using a tack organizer or even a repurposed shower organizer.

Double Doors

• A double door design is an excellent choice for barn doors that open out into a pasture or meadow. When the barn door is closed, the top part of the double door can be left open to improve air flow and reduce the temperature in the barn. When desired, both parts of the double door can be opened by swinging the doors outward and securing them with a hook or chain. This can allow owners to let their animals come in and out of the barn as they choose, making management and cleaning a lot easier. This design works particularly well for horses, who can come in when the weather is bad and spend the rest of their time in the pasture.
