How many horses die in a year due to colic?

It is estimated that between 12,000 and 15,000 horses die from colic each year in the United States. This number represents anywhere from 2.4% to 6% of all equine deaths annually. While colic can affect horses of all ages, sexes, and breeds, there are certain risk factors that may increase a horse's likelihood of developing colic, including poor feeding practices, sudden dietary changes, stress, parasites, lack of water and exercise. Recognizing the early signs of colic and quickly seeking veterinary attention can often lead to timely treatments that can save a horse's life.
