Things You'll Need
- Horse
- Muzzle
Instructions
Check that the muzzle is the correct size for your horse. When fitted, there should be a small space (half-inch to an inch) between the horse's mouth and the bottom of the muzzle. The head stall should pass comfortably over the head, and all the straps should fasten snugly without digging in.
Put the muzzle on. It should not be tight or restrictive and, if a grazing muzzle, should allow the horse to graze through it and chew normally. Check that you can fit two to three fingers between the cheek strap of the muzzle and the horse's face.
Adjust the muzzle so the throat lash fits snugly behind the horse's jaw bone. If you are using a halter or fly mask, it should be fitted over the top of the muzzle.
Check your horse regularly to make sure the muzzle is not rubbing. The top of the head stall and back of the muzzle can be padded with sheepskin if necessary.
