How to Wrap a Horse's Leg

Leg wraps perform a variety of functions for horses. In many disciplines, such as dressage, leg wraps make up part of formal turnout. They also provide protection during shipping or stabling. Veterinarians use leg wraps to support, warm and soothe injured legs, or to secure dressings. If improperly applied, wraps potentially cause more harm than good, damaging tendons and restricting vital blood flow in the legs. Practicing good wrapping skills reduces the risk of causing damage.

Roll your wraps into a tight, neat coil before beginning. For Velcro wraps, start with the part on the inside. This ensures correct placement of the Velcro tie when the wrap is unrolled.

    • 2

Clean your horse's legs using a soft-bristled brush to remove any mud or debris. Apply medication to the legs, if necessary.

    • 3

Place the wrap on the center of the leg, starting below the knee. Roll the wrap toward the back of the leg, overlapping 1/2 to 3/4 of the width of the the wrap. Check to make sure the wrap is tight enough to remain in place but still allows for circulation and movement.

Continue wrapping down the leg, then fasten the wrap using Velcro or a safety pin. Repeat the process to wrap the other leg.
