How to Pull a Coggins Test

The Coggins test is a test that was designed to detect Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). EIA is a viral disease that spreads from horse to horse. There is no vaccine or cure for EIA and infected horses have to be either quarantined for the remainder of their lifespan or euthanized to avoid spreading the disease. The Coggins test checks the blood of horses for signs of EIA. It can only be performed by certified veterinarians and processed by state approved laboratories. The phrase "pull the Coggins" stems from having the veterinarian come to the barn and draw the blood for the test.
