How to Simplify Equine Feed-Through Fly Control

Flies have been an annoyance around horses and other livestock for centuries. Most horse owners have tried a variety of different fly control methods, including chemical fly sprays, fly traps as well as fly sheets and masks for horses to wear. Feed-through fly control products are becoming more common as well. These are supplements that can be added to horse feeds in order to cut down on fly problems by keeping fly larvae from being able to develop in horse manure. Feed-through fly control products are available for horses from a number of different manufacturers.

Research feed-through fly control products and select the one you want to use on your horse. Be aware of the active chemical ingredients and any negative side effects that may occur from feeding these items to your horse. Products include Farnam's SimpliFly and Pfizer's Solitude IGR (see Resources).

Read all product instructions carefully. The instructions for Solitude IGR require a 1/2-oz. dose be added to feed once a day, regardless of the horse's weight, breed or size. However, many feed and fly control supplements require you to determine the correct dosage for your horse based on these characteristics.

Add product to horse's regular feeding program by opening the supplement bucket and placing the correct amount of fly control supplement in the horse's feed bucket along with the normal horse feed. Fly control product will come with the correct sized scoop included in its bucket. Mix supplement into feed to make sure product is consumed and not left at the bottom of the bucket.
