Molasses Recipe for Coughs in Horses

When your horse is coughing, you can concoct a batch a homemade cough syrup using molasses and a few other common ingredients to help the animal. The syrup tastes good, which means you will not have to battle with your horse to make him swallow it. This recipe can also be used for people with coughs.

Instructions

    • 1

Heat the molasses, vinegar and butter over medium heat in a small saucepan. Stir occasionally, to smooth the mixture.

    • 2

Pour 2 or 3 tbsp. of the syrup into a turkey baster or a large syringe.

    • 3

Squeeze the syrup into the horse's mouth while it is still warm. The syrup will have a sweet, smooth taste, so hold up the baster or syringe to your horse's mouth for him to taste.

    • 4

Store the remaining cough syrup in your refrigerator; you can heat it in the microwave whenever you need to give your horse another dose.
