My Horse Has a Lump on Its Lower Lip

Whether your horse is a source of labor around the farm or simply a pet, no one wants their horse to be sick. Horses can develop sores around their mouths for a variety of reasons, and their severity varies depending on the condition.
  1. Urticaria

    • While smaller bumps may be caused by something as simple as an insect bite, it may be a case of urticaria. This condition, which causes raised, round bumps, can be caused by food or hygiene-supply allergies. Depending on the severity of the condition, it may disappear in a few days or require treatment from a veterinarian.

    Summer Sores

    • Summer sores are causes by parasites that deposit larva on the soft spots of the horse's body. As the name implies, the sores are most common during the summer. They appear as round circles; and because horses often bite at them, they often bleed. If you suspect your horse has summer sores, consult your vet to obtain dewormer or another effective treatment.

    Melanoma

    • Horses, like humans, can develop skin cancer, or melanoma. On a horse, the condition is usually marked by solid, black, hard tumors. It is particularly common in gray horses. Melanoma is not as deadly in horses as it is in humans; and depending on the size and location of the growth, a horse with melanoma may not require treatment. Consult your vet to be certain.
