How to Treat Horse Skin Scars

Scars occur on a horse after an injury when the wound has finished healing. The healing process results in scarring. Unfortunately, the scars can mar the horse's appearance or even cause the horse discomfort. Treatments of the scar tissue cannot completely eliminate the scar, but they can minimize the scar or make it less noticeable.

Take care of the wound while the horse is healing. Proper care during the healing process will minimize the scar tissue that forms. For example, if there is an open wound, clean the wound regularly to keep bacteria from causing infections and have the vet give an appropriate antibiotic for the wound. Burns that could cause scarring need an appropriate burn medicine from the vet that will not only help the wound heal, but also relieve the horse's pain while healing. Always ask a vet about the appropriate measures to prevent infections or complications from the injury.

Light the moxa roll with a lighter or match. The roll burns slowly and produces a smoke that most horses do not mind. The herb mugwort, contained in the moxa roll, is thought to activate natural healing processes within the horse's body.

Hold the burning moxa roll approximately 1 inch away from the scar so that the horse will feel warmth but not discomfort. Work the roll slowly in a circle around the wound and gradually spiral the circle inward. Work back outward in the opposite direction. Spend about 20 minutes a day using the moxa roll.
