Can a Vet Tech Perform Treatments on Race Horses?

Veterinary technicians are comparable to registered nurses in human health care. Vet techs must complete required education and accreditation to be certified to assist veterinarians in caring for animals, including horses used for racing. In fact, the National Association for Veterinary Technicians in America recognizes both the Academy of Equine Veterinary Nursing Technicians and the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians for those specializing in the care of horses.
  1. Responsibilities

    • According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, vet techs are trained for numerous responsibilities in the care of race horses and other animals. In particular, vet techs often collect specimens for lab work, prepare horses for surgery or other procedures, and provide nursing care.

    Supervision

    • No matter what treatments are prescribed, all vet techs are required by the American Veterinary Medical Association to work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

    State Laws

    • Each state has its own laws regarding the treatments that a vet tech can legally perform on race horses. Some states allow vet techs to give injections, treat wounds and perform certain other treatments so long as they are done under the direction of the veterinarian. For example, in Kentucky, where horse racing is one of the major industries, vet techs can administer certain drugs, including vaccinations and parasite control agents, but other treatments must be performed by a veterinarian.
