Mutiple Vitamin Supplements for Horses

Although horses can get many of the nutrients from their food, they may need additional vitamin supplements to ensure they're getting all of the nutrients they need to be healthy. Horses and Horse Information reports that "horses need different levels of feed and nutrition in their diet depending on age, current weight, activity level and overall health." To ensure your horse is as healthy as possible, you can ask your veterinarian about your horse's specific nutritional needs.
  1. Types of Vitamins

    • The two main kinds of vitamins for horses are fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins can be toxic if given in excess and the amount given should be monitored very closely. Water soluble vitamins, although they should still be monitored closely, are not as toxic if given in excess. There are multiple vitamin supplements that include fat soluble and/or water soluble vitamins that can be given to keep your horse at optimum health.

    Fat Soluble Vitamins

    • Fat soluble vitamins refer to vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K. Vitamins A and D are both especially needed for stabled horses while vitamin E is important for your horse's immune system.

    Water Soluble Vitamins

    • B group vitamins are especially important for working horses.

Water soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B group vitamins. The B group vitamins are directly related to your horse's energy, so working horses need more B group vitamins than stabled horses.

    Multivitamins

    • Horse multivitamins range in price and features, so a consultation with your veterinarian may help you make a more informed decision. A few vitamins that include fat soluble and/or water soluble vitamins are "Accel" by Vita Flex Nutrition (supplies fat and water soluble vitamins), "Antioxidant Concentrate" (contains vitamin E, C and the B-complex vitamins), "Augment" (contains all vitamins including biotin) and "Clovite" (rich in vitamins A, D and B12).
