Supplement to Treat Stomach Ulcers in Horses

Unlike their wild cousins, domesticated horses are usually kept on small pastures and in stalls. This limits their ability to have access to unlimited grazing, which in turn can lead to stomach ulcers.
  1. Fiber

    • Fiber is one of the most important elements in a horses diet to avoid or help eliminate stomach ulcers. Grass pasture and hay are both very high in fiber and your horse should have free access to it if possible.

    Licorice Root

    • Licorice root is classified as a bitter root that contains anti-inflammatory properties. This herb also has anti-bacterial elements that can be helpful with ulcers due to bacterial infections. Licorice can also lower gastric secretions so should not be used for long-term treatments.

    Beet Pulp

    • Beet pulp is derived from sugar beet plants. This supplement is high in calories and fiber, which makes it a good choice for feeding horses prone to gastric ulcers. Beet pulp has a very low moisture content; therefore, many horse owners prefer to soak the beet pulp in water before feeding.

    Lecithin

    • Supplementing horses with lecithin can help cure gastric ulcers and strengthen the stomach lining to avoid future ulcers. The best source is to supplement with lecithin containing apple pectin.

    Aloe Vera

    • The Aloe vera plant has long been known for its healing properties especially in relation to digestion. Supplementing a horse with Aloe juice can help speed up the healing of existing gastric ulcers and prevent new ones from forming.
