Herbal Supplements for Breeding Horses

Breeding horses can be big business. In some areas of the horse industry, such as racing, hundreds of thousands of dollars can be made or lost on the production of foals and semen. Breeders are always trying to improve their horse's performance in the breeding and foaling shed, and many times use herbs to supplement their horse's diets, hoping to improve their overall health.
  1. Algae

    • One of the more common and popular supplements for breeding horses is algae. In feed supplements such as Aquacid, algae is utilized for its special minerals, which are easily absorbed and processed into the body of both mare and her growing foal. Algae is also supposed to increase the overall health of the immune system, so it is popular with stallion owners as well.

    Linseed Oil

    • This has been used for centuries to help stallions with fertility. It has recently been discovered that this oil is filled with omega-3 fatty acids, which are proven to increase sperm levels and the overall health of the male sex system. Increased omega-3 fatty acids increase libido, volume of semen, and boost the immune system, which can be stressed during breeding season.

    Glucosamine

    • Glucosamine has become very popular as a breeding supplement, especially for older stallions who are beginning to experience arthritis and other joint issues. Breeding is an intense physical act that requires the stallion to mount a mare or a dummy and thrust until ejaculation. This can be impossible if the stallion is in pain. Glucosamine helps ease the pain of arthritis and lubricates the joints, making it possible for stallions with pain issues to complete the act of breeding.

    Bee Pollen

    • Another popular herbal supplement to breeding stallion's diets is bee pollen. Rich in antioxidants, and high in protein and carbohydrates, it has been called "nature's most complete food." Owners who use bee pollen claim it affects the overall health of their horses -- increasing vitality, sex drive and longevity.
