Chinese Herbs for Heaving Horses

Horses heave, or violently wheeze and cough, because of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The disease is called "heaves" because of the tell-tale cough that horses develop. It is similar to emphysema in humans, and occurs most often in adult horses that are stabled in cold, drafty barns containing moldy hay or other allergens. Horses with the disease often lose weight and lack energy. While there is no cure, Chinese herbs alleviate these symptoms in some horses, but must be combined with Western medicines only under the supervision of a veterinarian.
  1. Garlic

    • Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory that decreases swelling in the horse's airways, and it increases appetite. The recommended daily dosage is 1/2 ounce to 2 ounces per day depending on the size of your horse. Freshly-grown, minced garlic works best, but is also available in powder supplements and other forms.

    Dong Quai

    • Dong Quai is known as a blood purifier; it increases energy and restores vitality. The root is dried and ground into powder to create tablets and capsules. The herb is used sparingly in horses since it mimics the effects of estrogen in the body. It is often used to treat reproductive issues in mares. Discuss the daily dosage with your herbalist or veterinarian depending on the weight and sex of your horse.

    Horehound

    • While not a traditional Chinese herb, horehound was incorporated into Chinese medicine as a tonic tea in the 1800s. It acts as an expectorant to remove mucous from air passages and it is also a stimulant. It treats respiratory tract problems in humans as well. Fluid is extracted from the thistle plant and dropped into the horse's food with an eyedropper.

    Comfrey

    • Comfrey reduces swelling as well as shrinks inflamed blood vessels from chronic coughing. It is also beneficial as a dietary supplement because it is high in vitamins and minerals needed to keep a horse healthy. The herb is turned in to a tonic and drizzled on the horse's daily feed.
