Instructions
Isolate the affected horse, suggests FEI Horses. The mites that cause mange will tend to jump from horse to horse, infecting each one they come in contact with.
Apply an organophosphate insecticide or lime-sulfur solution to the horse if it is suffering from sarcoptic, psoroptic or chorioptic mange, recommends the Merck Veterinary Manual. You can spray, sponge or dip the medication onto the horse. Treat the horse with the solution at least three or four times in 12- to 14-day intervals.
Administer ivermectin or moxidectin orally to the horse if it has sarcoptic or psoroptic mange. You will usually need to give several treatments two to three weeks apart in order to completely eliminate the condition, states the Merck Veterinary Manual. Dosage of the medication depends upon the horse's weight.
