How to Paint a Funny Fly Mask

A fly mask is a mesh covering designed to protect a horse's eyes from flies during the summer. These masks completely cover the eyes, but the horse is able to see through the mesh so that the mask does not interfere with visibility or cause the horse discomfort. Fly masks are usually gray and lack decoration, but you can apply non-toxic acrylic paint to the mask to give your horse the appearance of googly eyes or trendy sunglasses.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the fly mask on your horse and make a small mark with a washable fabric pen on the mask at the inner corner of each of the horse's eyes. Be very gentle to avoid poking the horse in the eye.

    • 2

Cut a piece of paper so that it fits on the mask between the two marks. Your finished design must fit on this piece of paper to ensure that it will not interfere with the horse's vision.

    • 3

Practice drawing funny eyes or sunglasses on the paper until you have created a design that you like.

    • 4

Draw the design on the fly mask with a washable fabric pen. Make sure that your design remains between the marks you made earlier.

    • 5

Fill in the design with non-toxic acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely.

    • 6

Remove any visible washable fabric pen marks with a damp towel.
