Warning Signs of Colic

Here are some general warning signs your horse is in abdominal pain. Your horse looks repeatedly at his belly or kicks at his belly. He won't eat, may be depressed or has not defecated in a long time. He may lay down and get up repeatedly and could even thrash about.
Anise Seed

Anise seed is known in the botany world as Pimpinella anisum. It is also known as pimpinel seed or sweet cumin.
What is it good for?

Anise seed has been known to be good for the relief of abdominal pain, indigestion, colic, bloating and gas. Grind up the seed to release the oil and mix it with your horse's favorite food to encourage him to eat it at the first signs of colic. Or mix the powder into a small bucket of water for your horse to drink.
What does it look like?

The anise plant is a highly aromatic plant that grows low to the ground and produces feathery leaves and flowers. The anise seed is oval in shape and grey-brown in color.

Anise will stimulate the body to secrete fluids and clear out congestion, which makes it good for asthma and bronchitis relief. Anise seed is also great for colds and sinus infections. It has been known to treat bad breath, and when taken with warm milk it can also be used to treat insomnia.
