Epsom Salts for Horse Colic

Colic is a terrifying event for horse owners and a very serious and painful experience for the horse. There are multiple ways to treat your horse and to prevent the condition from getting worse. Epsom salts are one treatment option, but you should only use it as advised by your veterinarian.
  1. Laxative

    • Epsom salts can be used as a laxative because they draw water into the gut.

    Impaction Colic

    • Epsom salts are most likely to be used if a horse is suffering from impaction colic, where there is a blockage in the digestive tract. Water and laxatives are commonly used to help with this type of colic.

    Sand Colic

    • Epsom salt can be helpful if there is a build-up of sand in the horse's digestive tract. Psyllium and mineral oil are usually used but a laxative such as Epsom salts can also be used.

    Paraffin Oil

    • For colic treatment, Epsom salts are often combined with paraffin oil, especially when used in cases of sand colic.

    Precautions

    • Do not attempt to treat your colicky horse with Epsom salts without veterinary supervision. Colic can be life-threatening; call your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your horse may have colic.
