Things You'll Need
- Veterinary degree
Instructions
Identify your level of commitment and desire to work with animals in an alternative medicine setting. Many veterinarians who go on to practice alternative medicines have advanced schooling in both veterinary studies and Chinese herbal/alternative medicines. To practice veterinary acupuncture in the United States you must be a licensed veterinarian.
Locate the proper school for your education. There are many accredited schools that offer degrees in veterinary acupuncture. The school should be able to teach you the basic principles of acupuncture and how it relates to veterinary care. It may teach you the principles of traditional Chinese medicine as well as the medical aspects of acupuncture. What you require from the school is partially based on your commitment and current education level and should be a very personal decision.
Complete the degree or program offered. This step may sound simple but requires time and effort that may be difficult to complete. It is however a very real and required step. You can harm the animals you are trying to assist if you do not complete the program with a full understanding of the medical procedures you are performing. The certificate should come from a fully accredited school and be registered with one of the national organizations.
Find a veterinary practice that specializes in alternative medicines. If your area does not have an alternative medicine office or the office does not work with horses you may want to consider starting your own veterinary clinic. You may also want to consider locating yourself somewhere that has an established office or is known for raising horses, as the demand is essential if you̵7;re going to maintain a steady practice.
