Holistic Treatment for Hives on Horses

Hives, by definition, are raised, itchy areas of skin that are usually a sign of an allergic reaction. They can be rounded or flat-topped but are always elevated above the surrounding skin. Hives are a clinical sign, not a disease. Hives usually disappear on their own within 2 to 24 hours.
  1. Cause

    • Hives are the result of an allergic reaction to antibiotics, antiparasitic drugs, hormones, vaccines or foods. Hives can also be genetic or caused by bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections. Stinging insects can also cause hives.

    Emergency Treatment

    • If your horse has an acute attack of hives, difficulty breathing, swollen eyes or nasal discharge, contact your veterinarian right away. This can be the sign of a serious internal problem.

    Water

    • Many times horses appear unbothered by hives. Hosing the horse with cool water will soothe its skin and make it more comfortable.

    Holistic Treatments

    • Holistic treatments for hives include Apis 30, Ledum 30 or Rhus Tox 30. Give 6 to 8 tablets once or twice a day for a few days. Da qing ye tea mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil is beneficial for the treatment of weepy hives; apply topically. Salves made from calendula or chapparel may also be beneficial.

    Nutritional Supplements

    • Since hives are an immune response, adding nutritional supplements that help support the immune system is beneficial. Dr. Madalyne Ward of Bear Creek Clinic suggests blue green algae, probiotics and Cell Tech Original Enzymes.
