Hind Gut Ulcer Remedy

A horse that is irritable, seems to be in pain shortly after eating, has had stomach ulcers or has had Bute or Banamine, may have hind gut ulcers. Horses do most of their digesting in the hind gut, and if they are unhealthy in this area, they will not be getting enough nutrition from their food. Here are a few ways to help provide relief for your horse.
  1. Diet Additives

    • Adding 1/2 cup of oat flour, not whole oats, to your horse's diet every day will help aid in proper digestion.

To increase the proper balance of bacteria in your horses digestive system, add a probiotic such as lactobacillus acidophilus. This will improve production of the proper intestinal flora which is essential for good equine digestion.

Add psyllium husk to your horse's diet to improve digestive health. About 1/2 cup daily should improve your horses digestion.

    Prescription Drugs

    • When caring for your horse, it is always a good idea to consult with a veterinarian. If your horse's symptoms are severe, your vet may recommend a prescription ulcer remedy, such as sucralfate or ranitidine. Be careful to administer the proper dose at the proper intervals, often three times a day.
