  1. How to Treat Swollen Joints in Horses

    • 1

Begin with hydrotherapy. This is often the best treatment as it works in many cases, and eliminates the need for other treatments. Take your hose and attach the high pressure spigot. Turn the water on low, and apply it to the hooves and work up to the swollen joints. After the area is wet, turn the pressure up, and apply the high power spray directly onto the sore area.

    • 2

Hose the sore area on each leg for at least 10 minutes each. Make sure steady pressure is applied to the swelling.

    • 3

Scrape the majority of the water off with your hands, and then apply a bracing liniment to the joints. Make sure you follow the label directions, as some liniments are stronger than others and can actually cause a chemical burn if you are not careful.

Walk the horse gently for at least 30 minutes. Turnout is one of the best treatments for swollen joints, as the movement causes better circulation, which is turn makes the swelling reduce. But it is important to turn the animal out in a small area, as extreme exertion will cause more harm than good.

Dose the horse with some medication, such as Bute, which is the same as aspirin, just made for horses. This works as an anti-inflammatory as well as a pain reliever. Check with vet for dosing information and possible side-effects.
