How to Give Winstrol to Barrel Horses

Winstrol-V, formerly known as Stanozolol, is considered an anabolic steroid. When administered to horses, its tissue-building (anabolic) properties are much greater than its masculinizing (androgenic) properties. Using Winstrol-V reverses the tissue-depleting process by increasing the retention of nitrogen and minerals as well as better utilization of dietary proteins. Performance horses, such as barrel horses, may benefit from increased appetite, leading to healthy weight gain and increased energy. Because of its predominately anabolic effects, Winstrol-V is safer for long-term therapy in horses.

Establish a need for the use of Winstrol-V in the horse. Is the horse recovering from an injury? Is this a castrated male needing help with building muscle mass or stamina due to a decrease in testosterone production? Or is it to be used therapeutically because of the massive amounts of adrenaline, blood and oxygen pumped through the body during a barrel race? During competition, a running horse's heartbeat rises from 30 to 250 beats per minute, pumps up to 132 gallons of blood and expels large amounts of red blood cells, referred to as spleen dump.

Obtain a veterinary prescription for Winstrol-V. Determine dosage by weight of the horse. The recommended dose is 25 mg per 100 pounds of body weight. This is equivalent to five mL for a 1,000-pound horse. If unsure of the horse's weight, obtain a weight tape and measure around the deepest area of the chest.

Wash your hands thoroughly and remove the metal seal from the vial. Open a new syringe and needle from the package. Remove the needle cap. Insert the needle into the rubber stopper at the top of the vial. Turn the vial upside down and pull back the plunger until the syringe contains the correct dosage. Remove the syringe and replace the cap on the needle until administration.

Cleanse the gluteal muscle (back of the thigh) area of the horse with alcohol. This area is located on the back side or rump of the horse about midway down on either side. Winstrol-V is labeled for intramuscular (in the muscle) injection.

Stand next to--and not behind--the horse to minimize the chance of being kicked while administering the injection. Remove the needle cap and inject the muscle by pushing the needle straight into the muscle, not at an angle. If necessary, this dosage can be repeated weekly for up to four weeks. Most results, proven with clinical trials, are achieved in two doses. If further therapy is needed, consult a veterinarian.
